It seems to me that "up next" at one time related only to baseball batting orders. "Next" is when one is waiting in line for service at, say, a taco stand. The "up" in "up next" must come from the admonition, "batter up." That make sense? (Note: I'm not happy to use extra words when fewer will do.) DKH
