Have them take the no. 1 train to the Staten Island Ferry (it's a short walk from ground zero) and take the ferry to Staten Island and then immediately back to Manhattan. It's a 20-25 minute ride each way and you get a nice view of downtown Manhattan, Jersey City, Brooklyn, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, etc. The best part of this is that the ferry is free!
