Although I feel both sides of the Sylvester debate have made good points, I feel this topic has strayed well beyond the limits of the list. Being somewhat of a libertarian myself (I might not like like what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it...and all that jazz), I strongly support the rights of people of both sides to express these views. However, I really wonder what a new subscriber to the list would think coming into the middle of this debate. Please, there are plenty of places on the net where you can discuss the rights and freedoms till your fingers bleed, but this is a list for the Teaching of Psychological Science. Yes, I'm sure it is possible to swing the discussion around to have relevance to teaching and to the list, but I do not feel that is the intention of the posters any longer. It has moved to a political argument over the merits and limits of free speech. If someone has a complaint about the posts of another list member, they should direct their comments to the list owner. (Where is Bill anyway?) Even if you convince the entire list that someone should be removed, it is up to the list owner to actually do it. Creating a debate on the list by personally attacking the individual will not solve the problem to anyone's satisfaction. This being said, I will wait a couple of days before making a decision whether or not to unsubscribe from the list until Fall in hopes that by Fall the list will have returned to issues more directly related to the list's purpose. - Marc G.
