How far is an understanding of the physical processes and structures in
the brain ESSENTIAL to a psychologists understanding of his (sic)
science?

Our staffroom has two schools of thought. One says that there are
relatively few areas of the discipline that actually require an
understanding of the brain; some may be enhanced by such an
understanding most would not. The other takes the opposite view: that
the brain in now central to our understanding of the discipline and this
is reflected in A-level syllabuses now (pre-undergraduate).

I would be interested in views.
