Hi Folks,

Let me correct a statement made in my previous post based on new information. I
wrote that the U.S. was threatening economic sanctions. Either this was something I
dreamed last night or it was something that I read which was erroneously reported.

At this point in time, the U.S. has made no official statement regarding economic
sanctions. At this point the official state department response parallels this
statement made by a department official: "Indonesia's international standing, and
the maintenance of productive relations between Indonesia and the United States,
depend on Indonesia's adopting a constructive approach toward both ending the
humanitarian disaster in East Timor and supporting the U.N.-administered process by
which East Timor will become independent,''

Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy of Canada has spoken out against sanctions.

Warm regards,

linda
