The option has been taken away from us here. Before this semester, a student
could withdraw from the class until mid-term. However, the instructor could give
a "WP" or a "WF." The WP showed up on the transcript, but without affecting
GPA. A "WF" was the same as an "F". Although I always gave the WP, because it
seemed that the student was at least exercising good judgment, I appreciated
having the option of a "WF." It's gone now. A "W" is "W" is a nonpunitive "W."
What bothers me more is "forgiveness credit." Students can retake a certain
number of hours (I think 12) in which they received a "D" or "F," with the first
grade erased. I have had students react with joy when I told them that they did
not make a "C!"
One not-so-benign consequence of all this "concern" for students is students
facing their last semester, in which they need an "A" or a "B" in order to pull
their GPA up to what is required for graduation. Often, that doesn't happen.
After letting them slide to have a warm body in the class and cash in the budget,
they get screwed at the end of their six-year adventure.
