A few years back, the Journal of Polymorphous Perversity ran a an article
on the misfortunes of failing students, claiming that they are indeed beset
by more tragedies than the average or above average student. I think it was
called "The FAKER Syndrome" or something like that. It was a hysterically
funny "statistical analysis" of the problems that affect failing students -
ten times more likely to get sick, fifty times more likely to have a
relative die or to be involved in a traffic accident, etc. A colleague
excerpted parts of the article and showed them as a powerpoint presentation
at our Wakonse teaching retreat. We all agreed that it might be interesting
to give the presentation to students on the first day of class  ;-)
