Tipsters - I received this question from a student. Her physician tested
her thyroid gland because she was having sleep difficulties, and she wanted
to know why the physician was testing they thyroid. She's also suffering
from mild depression, for which she is taking Zoloft. Any ideas here?

Underactive thyroid produces many of the symptoms of depression, including weight gain, sleep disturbances,  difficulty concentrating, and feeling depressed.  In fact, when a person presents with symptoms of depression, they should alwaysbe worked up for a thyroid disorder.
