Hi tipsters: I will be teaching semester at sea next spring (2012). I need to develop field assignments in the various ports of call and also try to organize a field trip or two. I need to do this immediately.
First thing: I've come up with good ideas for two of my classes but I am somewhat uncertain about the third. The biggest difficulty I have is that most studies in psychology involve quite a bit of verbal interaction and I can't count on any of my students (and certainly not me) to speak any of the languages of the countries we will be going to; nor can I count on having interactions with English speaking individuals in the countries. I have come up with a couple of really good observational/archival types of ideas for cognitive (related to color along various dimensions of percerption, interpretation of meaning of colors and linguistic relativity) and for social (observation of nonverbal communication), but am floundering on personality development. There is a large cross-cultural literature on the Big-5 but the only idea I've come up with so far would require bilingual speakers, with English being one of the languages. There is a literature that suggests that people score differently when tested in one language versus another, and the IPIP website for assessing the Big-5 (yes, I know the caveats) has it available in multiple languages that will be our ports of call. If anyone who teaches personality development on this list has a less interactive idea for a cross-cultural field assignment, I'm all ears, eyes.... In terms of organizing visits to places that would allow us to (1) observe nonverbal communication patterns, or (2) examine modern and indiginous art in terms of color or (3) interact with bilingual speakers (such as at a university).... If anyone on the list has connections or knows someone in any of these cities, who might be interested in meeting with my students and facilitating a tour or field trip, can you please contact me off-list: Roseau, Dominica Manaus, Brazil Takoradi, Ghana Cape Town, South Africa (are you there Dap?)
