There are the alternatives that Stephen was using, and others

Two I've used are:

Bit.ly

Goo.gl

With so many new URL shortening sites out there, using others besides TinyURL
is easy enough.

I tend to prefer Goo.gl because it integrates with my other Google services and
allows me to track if my students are going to the sites indicated by the
links. (Not by individual student, but the raw number of people going through
the shortened link.)
