In another article on CNET, I was surprised to find a neuroscience article that (a) was based on a new technique used in the study of alcohol consumption of rats and (b) how the use of light (optogentics) could be used to stop alcohol drinking in rats. The CNET article can be accessed here: http://news.cnet.com/8301-11386_3-57616706-76/lights-neurons-action-binge-drinking-lab-rats-go-cold-turkey/
The article it is based on is in Frontier in Neuroscience which can be accessed here: http://www.frontiersin.org/behavioral_neuroscience/10.3389/fnbeh.2013.00173/abstract I'm not sure what the implications are for human beings but it does suggests that certain types of addiction might be easier to treat than previously thought.
