Daniel Keyes, the author of the novella "Flowers for Algernon" which
was later expanded into a novel and served as the basis for the movie
"Charly" (Cliff Robertson played Charly and won an Oscar for his
performance), died this past Sunday in South Florida from complications
of pneumonia. Here is what the NY Times wrote about him:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/18/books/daniel-keyes-a-novelist-of-the-mind-dies-at-86.html?emc=edit_th_20140618&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=389166

Note: Keyes attended NYU for a while but would get his BA
and MA in English literature from CUNY's Brooklyn College
(Keyes was born in Brooklyn and grew up there).

I assume that most/all Tipsters are familiar with "Flowers for Algernon"
and/or the movie "Charly" and may have used one or the other in
one of their classes. It is a remarkable work of fiction that helps
to provide a unique perspective on the meaning of intelligence.
