Nancy,
R appears to require a fair amount of programming experience. This makes it
unwieldy to teach to undergraduates who tend to struggle with the more familiar
and Excel like structure of SPSS.
I mostly agree but things are a bit different if you use a graphical
user interface.
If you are more SPSS-oriented, you may be interested by the Rcmdr package:

It is a GUI that has a clear SPSS flavour. I once considered using it
before developing my own package. The limitation I found in it was that
the model comparison approach we adopt here was not feasible under it,
and IMO there are many theoretical and practical advantages in teaching
stats in a model definition and comparison approach.
