Annette, I have taught I/O psyc for years and rarely do my students have any preconceptions or misconceptions with regard to the material. They generally have no clue regarding the application of psychological theories and methods to the workplace so they tend to approach the material with an open mind. You might contrast this course with courses in child development where students feel they have some answers (they have personal experience having been kids or having reared children) so they are quicker to take issue with what the instructor is teaching. I tell my I/O students that if they are successful in their early years in the workplace, chances are good that they will be promoted to supervisor or middle-mgmt positions -- and the content of the I/O course will give them an advantage when they take that step up. By the end of the course, they tend to agree with me here.
