I remember from the "good old days" something about digital phone systems "frying" analog modems.

I'd be buying the newest 40hr box. That sounds like it might be a digital phone system, which usually don't play nicely with modems. There is a way to make it work - you get the full phone number for the local pop and enter the prefix, the number, and the suffix - all as the dialing prefix on the TiVo. Then it will dial everything, and then dial the number again, which is usually OK.
