I know that the lifetime is tied to the tivo service number.. I am asking if it
is possible to take the hard drive out of my current tivo and put it into the
new, (with lifetime) tivo. Since the lifetime tivo is only 80 hours and my
current tivo is upgraded to 500 hours, (or something like that.) Can I simply
take out the 500 hour hard drive and put it into the lifetime box? Or do I need
to format the hard drive or something first?

No. Lifetime is tied to the the tivo service number not to the hard
drive.
