I think the horizontal works better for air-flow. I was having problems with the TIVO rebooting and as I was checking things I noticed the My DVR expander was very hot. I had it in the vertical position which covers up one of the air inlets. Once I put it into a horizontal position, the temp dropped and my problems went away.
