This programme is an integrated part of the bilateral co-operation between Indonesia and Germany and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The research topics should address issues related to the sustainable use and management of coastal marine resources in coastal regions in north and south central Java, Sumatra and south Sulawesi and may cover a wide range of disciplines including marine biology and ecology, marine chemistry, ecological modelling and coastal zone management. The scholarships are available in the following fields of natural and social sciences: (1)Biochemistry: Marine bioactive substances; (2)Molecular Genetics of Marine Invertebrates; (3)Marine Ecology: Water column process in material fluxes in reef ecosystems; (4)Marine Ecology: Trophic modelling; (5)Marine Ecology: Ecological modelling; (6)Marine Ecology: Benthic ecology; (7)Marine Ecology: Fisheries biology, parasitology; (8)Marine Chemistry or Earth Science (9)Coastal Geology and Engineering; (10)Social Science: Marine protected areas and Ecotourism. The following types of research scholarships are offered: Type 1: PhD-degree or "Doctorate" in Germany, Type 2: PhD-degree in Indonesia ("Sandwich-Scheme"), Type 3: Short stay in Germany for Postdocs as well as for junior scientists (S2). The doctoral thesis will be carried out at German institutions of higher education and research centres actively undertaking marine research and development within the framework of bilateral co-operation between Germany and Indonesia in the field of marine and geosciences. The thesis will be incorporated in specific bilateral research projects and the field work will be conducted in Indonesia. Application conditions: Applicants (all types) must hold a Sarjana 2 or an equivalent academic degree in natural (physics, chemistry, biology, ecology) or social sciences (human ecology, sociology of natural resources, environmental law, economics). Type 1: applicants should not be older than 32 years, type 2: applicants should not be older than 36 years of age at the time of application. There ist no age limit for type 3. Duration of support: The scholarship (Type 1 and Type 2) will be awarded for 12 months initially and may be extended up to a total duration of 36 month (Type 1) and 24 months (Type 2). Since the stay in Germany calls for a certain level of proficiency in the German language, a DAAD funded 2-month German language course should be attended before commencement of research work. During this period it will be possible for scholarship holders to visit the future host institute and supervisor to discuss details of research. Type 3: support will be awarded for up to 6 months. Allowances: The DAAD will fund the journey to and from Germany, including a flat-rate baggage allowance (EUR 153 for the journey to Germany and EUR 383 for the return journey). In addition, it will be possible to apply for the funding of further journeys to Indonesia either for private or research matters. While attending the German language course in Germany, scholarship holders will be provided with accommodation free-of-charge and a pocket money allowance of EUR 410 per month. The scholarship award is EUR 975 per month. DAAD will also cover health insurance costs, with the exception of a personal contribution of EUR 10 per month. At the beginning of each academic year, the scholarship holder will receive a one-off "study and research grant" of EUR 460. Further allowances are not available. Type 3: allowances differ according to academic status (further information is available at the DAAD Office). Applications should be returned to the DAAD Jakarta Office and included the following documents in duplicate: (i)application form; (ii)full curriculum vitae; (iii)certificates detailing academic degrees already held (Bahasa Indonesia and English); (iv)academic transcripts (Bahasa Indonesia and English); (v)detailed presentation of the research or PhD project; (vi)time and work schedule; (vii)testimonials from two professors of the applicants choice; (viii)a TOEFL test certificate passed with a minimum of 550 points (paper based) or 213 points (computer based test). The final decision will be made in Spring 2003 after a personal interview with German scientists in Jakarta.
