kindly disseminate this announcement. ---------------------------------------------------------- ~~Apologies for cross-posting~~ Women's Electronic Network Training (WENT) 2003 Now Accepting Applications The Women's Electronic Network Training (WENT) Workshop is inviting women advocates, entrepreneurs, and trainers in the Asia-Pacific region who are interested in learning more about developing online content, e-commerce, or ICT training with a gender perspective to send in their applications to participate in this year's workshop. What is WENT? ICT Training by Women, for Women Since 1999, the Women's Electronic Network Training Workshop (WENT) has trained women on basic website development tools and other Internet-based group communications. WENT seeks to promote greater networking among women's organizations in the region and to enhance their capabilities to use information and communication technology to advance their social and policy advocacy. The first WENT workshop trained 23 women from 11 countries to use email and Web-based services to promote and enhance their participation in the review process for the Beijing Platform for Action (popularly known as the Beijing Plus Five review). In response to various information and communication needs of women in Asia and the Pacific, WENT has since diversified its training. Since 2000, WENT has run parallel instructional tracks on Web-based Information Management, local area networking, Using ICT for Advocacy, and database management. This year, instructional tracks are focusing on e-commerce, content development, and training for ICT trainers. Community Spirit Jointly managed by the Association for Progressive Communications-Women's Networking Support Programme (APC WNSP) and the Asian-Pacific Women's Information Network Centre (APWINC), WENT is open to women and their organizations in Asia and the Pacific and is supported by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). The workshop is for women whose organizations play or will play a significant role in promoting the use of information and communication technology to enhance women's roles and capacity in social and policy advocacy, as well as to strengthen women's organizations and networks in Asia and the Pacific. It is an initiative geared towards developing cooperative approaches and partnerships in increasing access and exploring applications of new information and communication technologies for women's empowerment. >From a workshop designed for women's organizations in the Asian region, WENT has opened its doors to women and their organizations in the Pacific. Women coming from relatively under-represented countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, East Timor, Kyrgyzstan, Laos and Uzbekistan have also graduated from WENT. To date, 115 women from 22 countries have participated in the WENT workshop. 5th Anniversary Celebration 2003 is the 5th anniversary of WENT, and a series of events is planned to commemorate this milestone. An anniversary dinner, exhibit, and symposium will celebrate the achievements of WENT graduates, and a special Outstanding WENT Graduate award will be given to one winner chosen from among the workshop's alumni. This year's participants will have a unique opportunity to join this celebration, and to become a part of a vibrant community. Training Program This year, WENT is offering 3 new instructional tracks that are designed to address important training needs of women and their organizations in the Asia Pacific region. Through a combination of lectures, group activities and discussions, case studies, and hands-on exercises, participants will gain skills and knowledge in online content development, e-commerce, and ICT training with a gender perspective. Track 1: Developing Online Content Who should join this track? 1. Women who play a vital role in their organization's information, communication and media work 2. Women from organisations which have the capacity to play conduit between offline information and online information What will they learn? 1. To formulate a strategy for using ICT to further information sharing, communication and women's networking 2. To evaluate and appropriate ICT tools to advance their organization's missions and goals 3. To write detailed Web specifications 4. Basic skills in preparing and producing content for an online audience 5. To support other information providers and users from participants' own organization and/or network 6. To promote collaboration and resource sharing among information workers of women's organizations Track 2: Putting the 'E' in Women's Commerce Who should join this track? Women who are engaged in any of the following: � Small-Medium Entreprise (SME) � Social Entrepreneurship � Telecenter work � Portal Development � Cooperatives expanding into E-commerce What will they learn? 1. To formulate an E-Business Model 2. To evaluate and appropriate ICT tools for implementing E-Commerce 3. Develop basic skills in electronic networking and social marketing 4. To promote networking among women engaged in small-scale businesses and social entrepreneurship Track 3: Training the Trainers Who should join this track? 1. Women trainers with basic ICT skills 2. Women trainers who want to work in the area of ICT training 3. Women ICT trainers who want to incorporate a gender perspective in their work What will they learn? 1. How to design and implement ICT trainings with a gender perspective 2. Enhanced skills in training delivery 3. To promote collaboration and resource sharing among women ICT trainers in the region Eligibility The Regional Training Workshop is open to women who meet the following minimum criteria: - Active involvement in her organization's information work. Preference is given to information officer/staff and experience in women's network/s. - Organization is engaged in any of the following: (a) information sharing, (b) resource center, (c) policy and social advocacy work, (d)community outreach and organizing, (e) women's and gender research, (f) training. - Has basic to intermediate computer-literacy - Fair to good knowledge of English language - Willingness to participate in a women's information network in Asia and the Pacific - Willingness to share the knowledge, skills and resources she will acquire from the training with other women - Willingness to work in a group-focused environment and process - Capacity to receive a week-long training conducted in university classrooms and student dormitory with shared rooms Location WENT 2003 will be held at the Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, Korea, located about one-half hour from the center of Seoul. The Sookmyung Women's University, a pioneer in "women's informatization," is the ideal venue for women's electronic network training. The Asia Pacific Women's Information Network Centre, which is based at Sookmyung Women's University, will be hosting WENT2003. Working Language The working language of the workshop will be English. Fair comprehension of spoken and written English will be required of each participant. Some members of the training team and the secretariat will have some degree of proficiency in languages other than English. Dates The training workshop will be from October 12-20, 2003. Participants should be at the workshop location by the evening of October 11, and should be ready to depart on October 21.
