Environment--Call for Applications ============================================================================================= Program Watson International Scholars of the Environment Invitation for Spring Term 2004 at Brown University, Providence, RI, USA Sponsor Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Henry Luce Foundation Dates 27 January- 12 May, 2004 Participants 10-15 outstanding environmental leaders at mid-career from university faculties, non-governmental organizations and government agencies within developing nations. Objective Rapid expansion of environmental research, management and policy capacities among developing nations harboring much of the world's biological diversity within globally important ecosystems. Environmental capacity-building is strengthened through close work with leading faculty and practitioners from Brown University and other major environmental institutions from Boston, New York and Washington. Intensive curriculum designed for key environmental leaders, their institutions and nations. Participants return home ready to disseminate the strategic approaches and tools acquired during their residency in the Global Environmental Program at Brown University's Watson Institute. Scope This intensive postgraduate curriculum links relevant approaches of ecosystem assessment, biodiversity conservation, environmental conflict resolution and governance, geographic information systems (GIS), global and regional climate change policy, coastal resource management, watershed dynamics, ecological economics, participatory rural appraisal, poverty reduction strategies, and environmental health. The interdisciplinary focus involves case studies, field visits, video conferencing, simulations, discussions, project development, and critical tool use. Science, policy and technology interfaces are explored within core curricula, specialized modules, elective course work and global environment seminars in the program, at Brown and throughout the Boston region. Extensive liaison with international environment and sustainable development agencies occurs during Boston, New York and Washington site visits. Certificate Successful completion of the intensive curriculum results in awarding of the UNEP Certificate in Integrated Environmental Management. Cost Program fees, materials, software, health insurance, housing, living stipend and books total $18,309. The Luce Foundation supports several top candidates through full or partial fellowships; others encouraged to apply for external grants or added employer support. Admission Admission is very selective and competition for fellowship support is expected to be intense.
