I'm sure it would work, but I'd like to stick to standard SMTP
authentication methods for simplicity and compatibility with existing
MUAs.

With this in mind, tmda-ofmipd uses the ESMTP Service Extension for
Authentication as defined in RFC 2554.  So far I haven't found a
situation that this can't accommodate.
