OK I'll take a wild stab at this one... In my case, I only have one MX Server, but... Since the error code that is returned from the rejected SMTP connection would be a 5xx error, then shouldn't the sending SMTP server simply throw out the message? If it was a 4xx error indicating only a temporary problem, then I would expect the sending server to try again, or bounce to a secondary machine. In either case, if the backup MX server is configured with the same information in the badmailfrom file as the primary, then even if the sending machine rolled to the backup, it would again get a rejected transaction.
