I haven't denied that's the case!  But in the log you posted,
presumably with vacation turned on, the EXTENSION variable is not
set.  When you aren't using vacation, do you have a .forward file?

I don't think it's vacation's problem.  I think whatever is processing
.forward is doing so before procmail is called and is losing the
information procmail needs.  I don't know how the whole Sendmail
picture fits together, but you may not be able to use .forward with
Sendmail.  You might need to add the call to vacation into your
.procmailrc.

As to vacation source... you said you were on FreeBSD, right?  The
vacation source can be found in /usr/src/contrib/sendmail/vacation.
