Scott--

A bit off the subject, but the problem you are seeking resolution for
is what has finally led me to turn off auto-confirmation. Too many
spams seem to be coming from spoofed addresses, and I know I hate to
get an automated response from a virus checker that thinks I sent a
viral e-mail when in fact my address was simply lifted from someone's
Outlook address book. I now use TMDA solely for generating hashed
addresses (even these are beginning to become suspect as SA now has a
couple of rules that tags TMDA hashed addresses as spam) and
maintaining a whitelist. Most of my spam is now handled by RBLs and
SA; those that end up in the pending queue are simply held instead of
confirmed, and usually consist of spams that have slipped by my SA
threshold.

Instead of sending these failed delivery messages to /dev/null, you
should consider analyzing them to determine if innocent parties are
receiving confirmation notices for e-mail they did not send. If so, a
better solution to your problem might be to install additional
anti-spam measures in front of TMDA, such as RBL checking or SA, and
use the TMDA confirmation feature as sort of a "last resort" for the
ones that slip through.

I think TMDA is a great idea, and Jason, Tim and others have produced
a fine anti-spam measure. I'm just beginning to think that passive
rather than active spam measures might be more appropriate in some
situations.
