Which MTA (email server) are you running?

Good question. It used to be postfix before this machine was rebuilt. It looks like it now has both postfix and exim installed. Any suggestions as to how a mere user such as myself can find out which is in use?

You need to ensure that the message text passed to TMDA (for original messages and confirmations) has a Return-Path header. This should be prepended to the email either by your MTA, or by the "script" (e.g. .qmail/.forward/...) that is used to invoke TMDA.

The above message indicates that the original message (not the confirmation response) didn't have this header, so TMDA can't parse it correctly to deliver it.

Interesting. OK, that makes sense, thanks. So presumably the newly-rebuilt server is not putting this header on, whereas it used to do so. I will ask and see whether it is possible to get the MTA (whichever it is) to do this. Maybe it's a simple on/off setting that nobody's thought about?

If this isn't doable, I can try to do it from .procmailrc... what exactly should Return-Path contain? Would it always be equivalent to $SENDER?

As you may have noticed, my knowledge of the workings of email is a little flaky...

Thanks again.
