It was more than likely just a case of "dictionary" spamming.  One domain 
that I host is continually hit with these things.  Basically the spammer 
sends spam to a list of username's (valid or not) at the domain.  Most of 
the messages bounce and double bounce, but the message gets through to 
any account that actually does exist.  

Very irritating.
