Blaine, the best treatment is prevention.
Do you cath? If so, look at the cleanliness of the procedure.
I change my Foley myself under rather clean, but not sterile, conditions. I
used to frequently get UTI's. Under the same changing conditions, I have not
had an UTI for over a year, maybe longer. I do not take any medications for
UTI's. [I do take both Lasix/furosemide and Aldactone/spironolactone to
lower my retained fluids. Drinking HELPs to lower my retained fluids.]
I drink 10 ounces of 27% cranberry juice every morning. I drink another 15
glasses of water every day. Not counted is the water content of all the
fruit and vegetables that I eat. If I walked, I would slosh.
The color of your urine is a measure of sufficiency of water consumption.
Pale lemon juice is the objective. If it is darker than that, drink.
I do have a harmless colony of pseudomonas in my urethra because it gets
very little flushing, only a few cc's every two weeks. It doesn't make
headway in the bladder. [Pseudomonas color the colonized surface a bright
blue/green. Through the rubber extension hose the colony appears olive drab
ugly.] Occasionally the urine is a bit cloudy, an indication of bacteria,
but it doesn't last more than a day or two.
How does this schedule work? Mostly by constantly flushing the bladder. But
the colony in the hose is evidence of another mechanism as well. I believe
the cranberry juice and the bladder lining have some sort of cooperation
going. Whatever, it works.
