I've never heard of Keen shoes personally, but the Croc type shoes that I just bought are wide in the toe area also. Outside of those, I mainly wore athletic shoes and sandals for the same reason, as well as comfort and support. It's wonderful to have a pair of shoes that do not crowd your feet.
