She explained to me that during her neurology rotation, they only took a 
cursory look at it---the professor told them that they would never see a case 
in their practice.

I wonder where your PCP went to Medical School.  The better schools, McGill 
Included, educate you concerning the rarest diseases, the diseases you will see 
least often.  Common diseases are common, and usually easily treated, so we got 
lots of training "On the job."
