If terry mcauliffe has been known for one thing since he became chairman of
the Democratic National Committee (DNC), it is his obsession with a building.
From the day he took over the DNC in February of last year, McAuliffe has
pursued an audacious plan to build a shiny, spacious, new party
headquarters--at an estimated cost of $32 million. Although the party's
current offices are cramped and run-down, it's more than a question of
aesthetics. The current building, McAuliffe argues, lacks the technological
infrastructure--Internet wiring, computer servers, etc.--the Democrats need to
compete with Republicans for small donors in the post-McCain-Feingold world.
"We have to do this," McAuliffe told The Wall Street Journal back in December.
House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt went further, saying that if the
building isn't constructed, "we don't have a future." Party stars like Hillary
Clinton pleaded with major donors to pony up huge soft-money donations before
campaign finance reform took effect, and they delivered: Hollywood mogul Steve
Bing coughed up $5 million for the project, and another entertainment mogul,
Haim Saban--the man behind "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"--wrote a check for
$7 million, the largest single political contribution of all time.
