I'm just curious, I didn't see mention of all the artists _you've_ used as
influence in your artistic style written below your drawing, so why should
this person, even if they DID happen to see your drawing and imitate it?
~I think there's a difference between being influenced by another's work and copying. Think how long the list of "credits" the Great Masters would have to put on their work, having studied for years under the preceding Great Masters. But if someone copied the Mona Lisa, colored her in Paint, made her blond and called it original work, one would have to question their integrity.
NOT that I'm comparing my little fan-art to Da Vinci's work-- lest you misinterpret what I'm saying again. It's fan-art-- the characters don't belong to me in the first place, as I said, therein lies my dilemma.
Melanie:
ALSO -- gee, the TMNT wear bandanas... and this artist had a 50% chance to
draw it flowing left or right. So 50% of the artists who draw turtles from
the front are copying you? Or is it because they're both waving in similar
fashions. HMMMM... I guess there's billions of ways to draw bandanas and no
more common way (like the one you've drawn.)
~As I was trying to express in my original post on this, I know my own drawing-- I'm quite sure she copied my drawing, altered it, and is claiming it as original work. It's not that big a deal, but I don't think it's a random coincidence that the pose, facial _expression_, bandana motion, and proportions are pretty much identical. I've drawn countless Turtles from the front -- as has nearly everyone here-- and they don't all look alike.
Melanie:
If this person copied your bandana without crediting you, I'm very sorry if
you're offended instead of 100% artisticly flattered. However, the way
they've drawn the jowls, the contours of the muscles, the fact that it's CGI
to your pencil/charcoal whatever, and the general proportion differences all
show that this person can draw on their own and didn't copy you EXACTLY,
even if they did draw a turtle from the front, oh my gosh.
~Um...I didn't say I was offended. I said I was mostly flattered and I guess the other part is amused. Of course, the picture is posted on Brina's site, not mine,
and so my little note about it being ok to take my artwork as long as you don't alter it couldn't have been seen anywhere.
I think you misunderstood the point of my post, Melanie. I wasn't pissed off at this girl, I was saying I *was* flattered. I do think its cyber-theft, albeit pretty low-level theft. Plus I think its sort of amusing that this girl didn't seem to think that other turtle fans (ie: the one she stole the drawing from) would visit the Official Site and recognize their own work.
