You don't mention what terminal you're running under, or what the value
of the TERM environment variable is (both within and outside of tmux).
Both of those are important to diagnosing your problem.

I'll take a shot in the dark, though: are you using gnome-terminal?
Perhaps from Ubuntu Karmic or Lucid (alpha)? I've noticed severe
problems in running that version of gnome-terminal, including issues
similar to those you're describing. That terminal is basically unusable
for me (at least with tmux, but the problem was definitely on the
terminal's side, and I even got it to crash easily while tracking down
the problem).

The fault probably lies with libvte, actually, so xfce4-terminal would
have the same issues.
