 Search for C-xC-e (or edit-and-execute-command) in man bash.
 It's not vim related, but bash. One of his $VISUAL or $EDITOR has to be 
 vim.

 The question is (when he'll confirm that is bash/readline is in emacs 
 mode): "why is tmux eating either C-x or C-e ?"
 For that, I'd suggest looking at .tmux.conf and make sure that one of 
 those isn't used/captured by tmux.
