patch 1-3 I sent to this list a couple of days ago (first attempt was
more than a year ago) implement exactly this, as a configurable
alternative to the current default behaviour. If you have your machine
set up accordingly, please try them (=> git am -k) and report back where
you see room for further improvement, thx.
