Why tomcat 3.x makes redirects (302) absolute ?

Excuse my ignorance, Why tomcat 3.x makes redirects (302) absolute ?

It leads to problems with NAT ( at router level ) redirects, and reverse
proxys, and it can commented without aparent harm....
