Personally, I'd prefer to banish any mention of CGI environment variables in the servlet spec. That was useful when the servlet api was introduced because it was familiar, but today it just causes confusion. It's probably too late for that big a change this time around :-(, but with my new job role (Web Layer Architect for J2EE) I might have a better shot at convincing people next time ...
