I would say this is pretty stupid but we see this request go to our webserver and no response comes back. This is bad. Without apache (1.3) in front the request comes in and a 404 goes back then the stupid IE browser gets round to ask for the page it should have requested in the first place... tracing the session with with a network sniffer, this seems to be what broke it: POST /_vti_bin/shtml.exe/_vti_rpc HTTP/1.1.
