So the description of this problem is IN the context of Form Authentication. Even after being authenticated via a Form authentication method, the getUserPrincipal still returns NULL for those resources which are not protected. I worked around this problem, however, by creating my own Valve and storing the authenticated user somewhere I can get it later.
