Help with Tomcat

I'm using Visual Age for Java to learn the language.  Visual Age already contains the Java classes and everything needed to write and run Java programs.   I installed Tomcat and need to know how to set the JAVA_HOME environment variable.  Do I need to install the Java SKD 1.2 to be able to set this variable?   Please help,  Edgar.
