Try using a single-processor kernel, turning off hyperthreading, and compiling Apache and mod_jk locally (instead of using binaries).
I know that dumping the multi-processor kernel is kinda silly when you have two processors, but having a dually running singly without crashing is better than a machine that crashes quickly. :)
