Hi, You can find the defaults for Sun JDK 1.4.2 on Windows 2000 in the java.sun.com VM options pages. I think it's a 64MB max heap.
Do you need to set it to more? That depends on your application. The process for determining the required memory tuning parameters for a given web application has been explained on this list numerous times in the past: search the archives.
