Thanks I use a File() constructor because the same class is used in a standalone situation
Ive checked my server.xml and it already seems to have unpacking set.

<!-- Define the default virtual host -->
     <Host name="localhost" debug="0" appBase="webapps"
      unpackWARs="true" autoDeploy="true">

should my docbase me appname or appname.war

Hi,

How can I get round this ?

Two ways: either configure the Host in server.xml to unpackWARs (which is the default I think even for Tomcat 4.x). Or write your app to the Servlet Spec, which means no File constructions except in the javax.servlet.context.tempdir directory.
