Please consider this: Tomcat v3.x and 4.0.x are no longer under active
development.  Should you encounter a serious bug in these versions,
you're more than likely out of luck in terms of an official fix.
Running versions this old, you're also less likely to get help from the
list.

Even development for v4.1.x may have already dropped off, what with two
5.x branches having been released.

In theory, the later the (stable) version, the better overall it is
compared to earlier versions.  Both 4.0.x and 4.1.x achieved stable
releases.
