gzip -d jakarta-tomcat-5.5.9.tar.gz | tar -xf

If you can't unpack the source you'll might get the same problem with the
binaries, I guess.
Don't know anything about AIX but i think
gunzip -c jakarta-tomcat-5.5.9.tar.gz | tar -x
should be worth a try.
