yea i've had "reasonable" success with rpms.  personally, for a program as complex java (or any language) i'd suggest grabbing the source tar.gz from blackdown.org, or sun, and installing it this was.  this is not to say tho that there is a way to fix this specific issue w/o going to such great lengths.

good luck

hmm....you where able to compile that java source ok huh?  or was this from a RPM?
i'll usually run into problems while compiling that give errors similar to this, hence hacking the Makefile, altho this dosn't seem to be the case.

i've had problems getting the jsdk to run on linux in the past, i'd suggest using the source avail. from blackdown.org as well.

a quick remedy might be to see if you infact have libX11.so.6
    #locate libX11.so.6
if that fails then it's probably an 'X' issue, if not make sure the path that the Makefile checks is correct.

I installed jdk1.3.0_02 onto my machine and changed the path to the bin
directory.  When I try to run that java command, I get the following
error...

Is this a bug with java, or does it have to do with a file permission I am
not setting correctly with Linux?  Anyone know?
