This is a guess, but I'm thinking not all the elements in the 
workers.properties file are used by mod_jk.so.  I honestly don't see the 
importance of the tomcat_home directory to the Apache side of things.  The 
java counterpart to it in Tomcat is more likely use such information.

Besides, there's no substitute for experience and Robert Dunlop's email shows 
it aparently works.  Check out his email for specific stuff.
