I think it's a VM error I can't reproduce the error in this environment: Tomcat: jakarta-tomcat-4.0.3 IBM VM: Classic VM (build 1.3.0, J2RE 1.3.0 IBM build cx130-20010626 (JIT enabled: jitc)) Linux: Debian 2.2.18
But with the Sun VM (Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1-b24, mixed mode)) I get comparable results in the same environment.
