Nope, in my opinion you made the right choice. That's how I do it; I never use the Apache that comes with RH. The HOWTO covers installing the JDK, installing Apache from source (2.0.44), installing Tomcat 4.1.18 from binary, and installing and configuring the JK connector (mod_jk.so).
