OK, I finally got it working. It also needs ide_info, which is missing from
the add-on mirrors ... I am not sure that the one that I got from the small
distribution that I had lying around (ZipSlack) is working, since I get
strange messages about reset not working and such, but at least the
"/etc/pcmcia/ide" script runs with an ide_info available in sbin. Oddly the
ide_info man page is on the mirrors, so it was possible to find out in more
detail why the script needed it, but omitting the man page and including the
ide_info would be of more use.
For those who want to do the same thing, they need to know to use
/etc/pcmcia/rc.pcmcia stop
/etc/pcmcia/rc.pcmcia start
to retry after the config is edited ... it is not entirely obvious to me
where you would run across this information, but looking in the archives I
saw "pcmcia start/stop/reset", which worked on the old tomsrtbt disk that I
had, and after some rummaging around on the new distribution I guessed
rc.pcmcia reset, which gave me the message that it only did start and stop.
But anyway, it works, after a fashion.
