[tools-compilers] No compilers

I managed to find GCC; but cannot work out how to install it. It is in tar.z2 
format. I couldn't find a way to use it as a package, extracting it revealed 
several folders which I attempted to copy into /, but was unable to do so, as 
it required me to be root.
